Restoration of Charles River Esplanade for the Century

Esplanade 2020, a visionary plan published by The Esplanade Association, outlines the conservation of the Charles River Esplanade at the park’s 100th anniversary. A team of designers, landscape architects, horticulturists, traffic experts, environmentalists, and other community members included Mark Favermann (MCRP ’78). The project aims to transform Boston’s waterside park into a world-leading urban public space.
An article in the Boston Globe on February 14 extends the effects of the Esplanade project to Massachusetts-wide infrastructure initiatives that will prioritize bike lanes and sidewalks. Rather than a master plan, the report on the Esplanade makes site-specific recommendations to be elaborated on to make the park relevant, engaging, and fun for its next century.
