Whats the big idea?

The final review of the Master of Urban Planning first semester core studio was all about big visions. For their last exercise, students were tasked to identify the visions, underlying ideas, and novel physical interventions of two influential urban plans from the western planning canon: a true classic and one from Boston. This “reverse-engineering” also helped to reflect upon the plans the students created earlier in the semester. The results were presented in a plan gallery followed by fast-paced Pecha Kucha presentations. At the end, students and guests received a bound collection of over 30 plan summaries, ranging from Savannah’s plan of 1733 to Boston’s Big Dig.
Studio instructor Judith Grant Long (associate professor of urban planning) said, “Our planning students produced a very impressive exhibition—the gallery was multi-media, interactive, and also critically reflective. A terrific day spent celebrating and debating urban planning at the GSD.”
