Laura Gilmore O’Connor (MUP ’13) awarded second place in APA Transportation Division Student Paper Competition

Laura Gilmore O’Connor’s (MUP ’13) paper “Exploring a Framework for Transportation Justice: The Case of the Green Line Extension” won second place in the APA Transportation Division Student Paper Competition. Laura wrote the paper for Assistant Professor Joyce Rosenthal’s Environmental Justice and Climate Resilience in Planning and Design course in the fall 2012 semester.

The paper examines the role that environmental justice issues played in framing arguments for the Green Line extension project’s approval. The paper also evaluates the effectiveness of the proposed extension in meeting a variety of justice objectives.

Laura said of the award, “It was a real honor to have Professor Rosenthal nominate my paper for the award and to receive Harvard’s nomination to the competition. I was very pleasantly surprised to be awarded second place in the competition.” Laura will be participating in the award ceremony at the Transportation Division reception at the APA national conference in Chicago.
