A team from Harvard that includes 3 GSD students has advanced to the regional finals of the 4th Annual Hult Prize. Venkata Krishna Kumar Matturi, Conor OShea and Ghazal Jafari (MDesS candidates) working with Varun Bhandari (MPA, HKS) and Yogeeta Manglani (MSc, HSPH) will compete for a chance to secure $1 million in start-up funding to launch a sustainable social venture that promotes global food security.
The 2013 Hult Prize, the world’s largest student competition for social good, received more than 10,000 applications from over 150 countries. This year’s challenge – to develop a way to get safe, sufficient, affordable and easily accessible food to the 200 million people who live in urban slums – was selected by President Clinton, whose Global Initiative co-sponsors the award.
The regional competition on March 1 and 2, 2013 will be held at the Hult International Business School in Boston. The winning team will move into a summer business incubator, where participants will receive mentorship, advisory and strategic planning as they create prototypes and set-up to launch their new social business. The final round of competition will be hosted by the Clinton Global Initiative at its annual meeting in September.
