Kiel Moe (MDesS ’03) promoted to associate professor of architecture and energy

The Graduate School of Design is pleased to announce the promotion of Kiel Moe (MDesS ’03) to Associate Professor of Architecture and Energy, effective July 1, 2014.

Moe has been Assistant Professor of Architectural Technology at the GSD since 2011. He also serves as Co-Director of the MDesS program, coordinator of the Energy & Environments MDesS concentration, and director of the Energy, Environments, and Design research lab at the GSD. He has previously held faculty positions at Northeastern University, the University of Illinois, Chicago, and Syracuse University.

Focusing on an architectural agenda for energy that is ecologically and architecturally ambitious, Moe’s research and pedagogy analyzes buildings as manifestations of large scale energy systems, and examines overlooked and discrete thermal parameters in buildings that have great impact on the power and thermodynamic depth of architecture. Recent projects include solid wood buildings in Colorado and southern Vermont, a masonry building letterpress studio in Maine, a loft renovation in Somerville, and an exhibit installation in Boston.

Moe received the 2013 Boston Design Biennial Award, the 2011 Architecture League of New York Prize, the 2011 AIA National Young Architect award, as well as numerous design awards for individual projects from the AIA, North American Wood Design Awards, and Boston Society of Architects. He was also the 2012 Barbara and Andrew Senchak Fellow MacDowell Colony, and the 2009-10 Gorham P. Stevens Rome Prize Fellow in Architecture.

Moe is author and editor of multiple books, including Insulating Modernism (2014), Convergence: An Architectural Agenda for Energy (2013), and Thermally Active Surfaces in Architecture (2010), among others. He is developing a sixth book on thermodynamics in architecture with Sanford Kwinter (2014) and a technical manual on Emergy Systems in Architecture with Ravi S. Srinivasan (2015).

Moe received his BArch from the University of Cincinnati, his MArch from University of Virginia, and his MDesS in Design and Environmental Studies from the GSD.
