The Lifelong Fellowship

There is no such thing as a former Loeb Fellow.

The year at Harvard is a rich and rewarding time. The learning is non-stop, the new insights are constant, and the experiences sink into your mind and guide your future practice.

But none of this stops when a Fellow “graduates."  He or she becomes part of a worldwide network of over 400 alumni/ae Fellows providing a network of colleagues unparalleled in the professional world.

At the core of this network is the Loeb Fellowship Alumni/ae Council (LFAC). This body consists of a delegate from each class of Loebs and a set of officers. They meet annually to plan activities that extend the connections and the mutual learning among the Fellows. Examples include:

Alumni/ae Council Grants cover travel costs for Fellows to come together for events that benefit the community of the host Fellow.

The Annual Loeb Alumni/ae Fall Study Tour brings Fellows together to explore a great city guided by the alumni/ae of that city.

The 13th annual Study Tour to Vancouver, October 13 to 16, 2011 was an enormous success with 75 Loeb Fellows and affiliates attending.  The program for the tour was curated and hosted by Heather Tremain, LF 09 and her colleagues in Vancouver.  To see one alumni Fellow’s reaction to the tour check out Anthony Flint’s most recent article in the Lincoln Institute of Land Policy at http://www.lincolninst.edu/news/atlincolnhouse.asp.

The Annual Memorial Luncheons bring together Loeb alumni/ae of a particular city on the first Friday of December. The events commemorate the annual luncheon once held by John and Frances Loeb for the Fellows in New York City.

The Loeb Anniversary Reunion and Symposium occurs every three years and brings all alumni/ae to Cambridge for a time of study, conversation and reconnection.

William A. Doeble Fellowship in Community Design
Recently, the LFAC led a fund raising effort among its members and generated funds necessary to endow the William A. Doebele Fellowship in Community Design. These Fellowships will provide stipends for students to bring their design and planning skills to public and non-profit organizations during the summer.

Just as the alumni/ae play an active role in the academic life of the Graduate School of Design during their year in residence, they continue to be a resource for the school during the years after their time in Cambridge.  Fellows serve on juries, give guest lectures, hire students for internships and after their graduation, and host events in their home communities.

Apart from these formal activities, the relationships built during the year of residency and the many other alumni/ae activities result in numerous professional connections.

There is no question that the Loeb Fellowship is a lifelong experience.
