Who Should Apply
Architects. Landscape Architects. Urban Planners. Public Artists. Journalists who write about urban and environmental issues. Elected Officials who focus on the built and natural elements of their localities. Community development leaders. In short, people of exceptional skill who work to design, plan, preserve and critique the places where we live, work and play.
The program is for people who are at mid-career. We seek professionals who have begun to display skill and leadership ability and who have the potential to take those capacities to much higher levels. The opportunities presented by the Fellowship work best for those at mid-career—experienced enough to ask the hard questions, but with plenty of time left to make an impact. A typical class of ten Loeb Fellows averages about 42 years of age.
The Fellowship is for practitioners. It is not a sabbatical program or a residency. There are many other programs for those purposes. The Loeb is unique in providing an opportunity for people who work in these fields to pause in the midst of their careers and take stock of what they have learned, expand their skills in the midst of a great university and chart the next phase of their working life.
We value a creative and motivated work history above more traditional credentials. Professionals who have demonstrated the capacity to make a difference in their fields with atypical backgrounds or unusual career paths are encouraged to apply.
