Resources

CAD/CAM and Robotics Lab

The Graduate School of Design enjoys a growing collection of CAD/CAM tools supporting wide-ranging activities in the design studio as well as specific research in materials and building technology. Our tools include input and output devices as well as CAD/CAM and product development software, which together provide a balanced representation of a field that has experienced explosive growth. Recent additions to the lab include an advanced polyjet rapid prototyping machine as well as a robotic milling and waterjet center.

Wood- and Metalshop

The wood- and metal shop at the Design School offer a comprehensive range of hand and powertools primarily used for building mock-ups and scale models. It also houses a vacuum forming machine to form thermoformable plastics. The metalshop has equipment for work with sheet metal work and bar stock. MIG welding and Oxy-Acetaline welding is also available. Recent additions to the shop include a large Prototrac CNC knee mill as well as an ABB IRB 140 robot. (more info...)

Universal Testing Machine

Housed in room L 32, the Satec HVL 60 testing machine is equipped for tensile, compression, as well as 3-point bend tests of small specimen. It can apply loads up to 60,000 lbs. The machines is equipped with a digital data acquisition system. (more info...)

Materials Library

The Harvard Design School has developed an extensive collection of material samples and related descriptions of new and innovative materials. The collection is housed in Room L33 of Gund Hall, adjacent to the Woodshop and CAD/CAM Facilities areas. It has regular opening hours throughout the semester. The collection database can be searched online.

Modeling and Simulation Applications

A wide range of Modeling and Simulation Applications are used for teaching and research. These include state of the art applications that are regularly upgraded, always remaining at the cutting edge of technology.
