Kennedy/Knox/Sheldon Traveling Fellowships Application Information

As mentioned earlier this summer, Harvard University's Committee on General Scholarships oversees Travelling Fellowship opportunities for which GSD students may be eligible to apply. Please review their website for a complete list of fellowships and applications at www.scholarship.harvard.edu/fellowships.html.

The more popular fellowship options are the Sinclair Kennedy Traveling Fellowship, the Frank Knox Memorial Traveling Fellowship, the Frederick Sheldon Traveling Fellowship and the Australian Graduate Research Scholarship. These four opportunities, grouped together because they share a common application, have different requirements and focus.  Please review the timeline information below specific to GSD applicants.

Application Timeline for the Kennedy, Knox, Sheldon and Australian Graduate Fellowships

November 13, 2009: Applicants must submit a preliminary draft of their application, along with the names of the two people who will later provide letters of recommendation, to the GSD Office of Student Services, Gund Hall 422. Submitted drafts will be reviewed by select faculty.

December 16, 2009: Approximate date applicants will receive feedback from faculty review.

January 22, 2010: Final applications are due to the GSD Office of Student Services, Gund Hall 422, including all supplementary materials listed on the application (this includes letters of recommendation).  Complete applications are reviewed, approved, and ranked for submission to the Committee on General Scholarships (CGS), who will then consider applications from across Harvard, and make a decision, by the end of April.

For additional questions, please contact Keith Gnoza (kgnoza@gsd.harvard.edu) or Carlos Reyes (creyes@gsd.harvard.edu) in the Office of Student Services, Gund 422, 617-495-5453.

Additional Information
Application deadlines are similar each year, so if you are ineligible for this year, or don’t have time to prepare your application, you may keep it in mind for next year.

Dr. Cynthia Verba has written a helpful resource that includes various successful fellowship applications that may be helpful with this process. The publication is called Scholarly Pursuits.
