Course Description

Villages in Development

This workshop will focus on villages in China's Pearl River Delta. The rapid development of the region has increasingly led villages away from agriculture and towards industry or turned them into residences for migrant workers, while expanding urbanization has changed many of them into "villages in the city."

Collaborating with students from the South China University of Technology, we will investigate the social, physical and economic conditions in two case study villages in Greater Guangzhou in order to identify ways in which they can more actively respond to the forces of urbanization and industrialization.

Enrollment is limited to twenty students, ten from each school. GSD students will travel to China in early March and Chinese students will visit the GSD in May.
