02308: Drawing in the City of Rome (VIS 0230800)
Workshop - 4 credits
The Rome drawing workshop places students within the context of Rome to live in, observe, analyze and draw from its complex configuration the ideas insightful to the composition of architecture. In particular, the workshop focuses on the nature of urban accretion and students are introduced to the city of Rome by way of walking tours that relate the experience of streets and spaces with specific buildings. Direct experience, represented through drawing and observation and assisted by introductions to the city from resident historians and architects, helps to create knowledge useful to the evaluation of American urban form by comparison.Large format easel drawing is conducted daily within the streets and spaces of Rome and is complemented by weekly watercolor instruction. Students also maintain sketchbooks as an archive for their observations and discoveries during the three-week workshop.
