Course Description
This seminar presents selected texts from the history of conservation (Riegl, Viollet, Ruskin) together with theoretical treatments of the genealogy of collective memory (Halbwachs, Nora, Said), the experience of history (Foucault, Jameson), and the reception of technology (Benjamin, Heidegger). The course provides conceptual frameworks for thinking practical problems in critical conservation and design intervention. Required for candidates in the Critical Conservation track of MDesS, it is open to students from all programs.
