Course Description

North America as an evolving visual environment is analyzed as a systems concatenation involving such constituent elements as farms, small towns, shopping malls, highways, suburbs, and as depicted in fiction, poetry, cartography, television, cinema, and advertising and cybernetic simulation.Note: Offered jointly with the Faculty of Arts and Sciences as VES 107.Prerequisites: None.

Course Description

Selected topics in the history of the North American coastal zone, including the seashore as wilderness, as industrial site, as area of recreation, and as artistic subject; the shape of coastal landscape for conflicting uses over time; and the perception of the seashore as marginal zone in literature, photography, painting, film, television, and advertising.Note: Offered jointly with the Faculty of Arts and Sciences as VES 166.Prerequisites: GSD 4105 and GSD 4303, or permission of the instructor.

Course Description

Students may take a maximum of 8 credit units with different instructors in this course series.Prerequisites: Graduate standing. Candidates may arrange individual work focusing on subjects or issues that are of interest to them but are not available through regularly offered course work. Students must submit an independent study petition and secure approval of their advisor and of the faculty member sponsoring the study.

Course Description

Prerequisites: Graduate standing and approval by the landscape architecture faculty.In this preparatory seminar for students intending to enroll in GSD 9303 the following term, direction is given as to the appropriate form and content of landscape architecture theses. Students prepare thesis proposals for review and acceptance by the faculty.
