The last of a four-semester sequence of design studios concludes the introduction to architectural design by emphasizing students' elaboration and substantiation of ideas through complex design and by critically addressing the status of contemporary architectural thought through discussion, lectures, and seminars.Prerequisites: GSD 1201

Candidates may arrange individual work focusing on subjects or issues that are of interest to them but are not available through regularly offered course work. Students must submit an independent study petition and secure approval of their advisor and of the faculty member sponsoring the study.

A student who selects this independent thesis for the degree Master in Design Studies pursues independent research of relevance to the selected course of study within the Master in Design Studies program, under the direction of a GSD faculty member. The seminar is designed as an introduction to the methodologies and disciplines that have shaped the field of architectural history and theory. We will probe critical perspectives on architecture's relation to aesthetics, society, and the environment as well as examine the enduring historical and epistemological significance of these perspectives. Topics include: autonomy, formalism, history to new historicism, phenomenology, semiotics, gender and psychoanalysis, ecology, the metropolis, the culture wars, technology and science.
