Department of Architecture

Sheila Kennedy is a founding Principal of Kennedy & Violich Architecture, (KVA) an inter-disciplinary practice that explores new relationships between architecture, technology and urbanism in contemporary culture. KVA offers clients professional services in urban design, architectural design and material design and development. Central to the work of KVA is the idea that information infrastructure can be transformed by design and integrated into the architecture, materials and activities of daily life. With the firms' material research unit MATx, KVA works with business leaders, manufacturers, engineers, educators and public agencies to design and develop new applications for materials emerging technologies. KVA has pioneered the integration of light, information and smart controls in textiles and architectural building materials and offers design leadership in large area applied research for semi-conductor technologies. New tactile digital interfaces in plywood and interactive electronic textiles developed by KVA were recently exhibited at the Cooper Hewitt National Design Museum and awarded for Design Excellence in the 2003 Annual Design review by Industrial Design (I.D.) Magazine.
