To involve oneself in a situation so as to alter or hinder an action or development*Definition from the Merriam-Webster DictionarySince the early 80s, the use of rapidly developing slide and video projection technologies have become so popular among artists and media professionals that they stand today as a standard artistic technique and equipment. Projection has become integral part of most multimedia installations, and presentations, art projects in public spaces, and in art galleries, as well as an important component of cultural political and commercial events. The aim of this course is to review and evaluate this phenomenon while inspiring and assisting students in their search for original concepts through practical experimentations and theoretical exploration in hope for expanding expressive, analytical, interventional and interrogative potential of art of projection. The primary objective of the workshop will be practical work involving the development of projection and projection related projects. These projects may be engaging interior and/or exterior spaces, architectural forms and environments, become interactive or responsive, performative, operate as temporary or semi-permanent, or permanent multimedia installations, requiring original software or hardware design, and/or involvement of other technologies. The theoretical part of the workshop will include readings and discussions of texts addressing various present day practices, concepts, notions, techniques and heritage of art of projection, installation and intervention.Projects can be developed individually or in teams. Course participants may design and experiment with new communicative tools, equipment, networks and environments. Students should feel free to integrate their artistic and theoretical research interests with the course\’s agenda. There will be a mid-term project and a final project. Informed and experienced guest reviewers may be invited to speak and respond to student projects. The course will be developed in the context of programmatic preparations toward the exhibition and conference on Art and Design in the Public Domain planned to happen at GSD in March 2011. Students projects, and their final presentations my become a contribution to this project
