Practice as Project Lecture: Ana Miljački, OfficeUS

OfficeUS

Ana Miljački (PhD ’07), Associate Professor at MIT and co-director of OfficeUS, spoke to students about the last century of globalization in the profession of architecture in the US. Alongside Eva Franch I Gilabert and Ashley Schafer, Miljački’s curatorial work with OfficeUS, founded for the US Pavillion at the 2014 Venice Biennale, chronicled changes in the profession over time by studying and tracking the architecture produced by US firms abroad. A principle ambition of OfficeUS is to study the architecture office as the space conditioning architectural production.  As more offices exported work abroad in the 20th century, the architectural office had to adapt, both financially and aesthetically, to provide a more global service. OfficeUS tracks these adaptations, and speculates on their continued transformation in the future. After explaining the scope of work in OfficeUS to students, Miljački engaged them in discussion about the ramifications of globalized media on the future of architectural practice.

Ana Miljački is a critic, curator and Associate Professor of Architecture at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where she teaches history, theory and design. (2007) in history and theory of architecture from Harvard University, an MArch from Rice University and a BA from Bennington College. Her research interests range from the role of architecture and architects in the Cold War era Eastern Europe, through the theories of postmodernism in late socialism to politics of contemporary architectural production.
