Denise Scott Brown, “Mayhew’s Architecture”

As principals in VSBA Inc., Denise Scott Brown and Robert Venturi have sought new freedoms for architecture while maintaining thoughtful eyes on traditional concerns. Their projects range from urbanism to decorative arts, but most have been in civic and academic architecture. Research, teaching, and writing are inseparable components of their work. With practicality and an aesthetic that welcomes color, words, and the “everyday landscape,” their architecture has redefined aspects of mainstream practice and raised the profile of the profession in the popular imagination. Their Learning from Las Vegas has been credited with shifting the scope of architectural research even as their road trip affirmed the place of the grand tour. Ms. Scott Brown will consider changes in architecture and her work over the span of her career and describe how in “old age” she has come be at the eye of a storm that is transforming the discipline once again.
