Event Description
13th Annual Greater Boston Affordable Housing Development Competition
AHDC is open to graduate students interested in architecture, planning, finance, and policy. Student teams are paired with local developers to create an affordable housing proposal that covers issues of design, community engagement, sustainability, and finance. AHDC requires that at least two Boston-area schools be represented on each team, affording participants an opportunity to work with their peers from other universities.

In addition to their developer sponsor, teams are also paired with mentors who are professionals in the field to refine their designs and financing plans. Throughout the course of the competition, students also have access to experts in sustainable building technologies, housing law, and other related disciplines.

The competition is sponsored by the Federal Home Loan Bank of Boston, along with the Boston Society of Architects/AIA, Kevin P. Martin & Associates; ICON Architecture, Inc.; and Citizens' Housing and Planning Association. The top three proposals will split prizes of $10,000, $6,000 and $3,000, respectively, with their developers.

Information sessions will be held at the Harvard GSD on February 5th and at MIT on February 7th, both from 6-8pm. The GSD information session will be in Room 318 and the MIT session will be in Room 9-450B on the 4th floor. There will be food at both sessions.

While it is not necessary, taking GSD5490 is a great way to get the most out of the competition. Professor Marchant, a real estate development professor at the Harvard Kennedy School, ties his lesson plans to the competition, organizes a bus tour of the AHDC sites, and gives teams a lot of in-class feedback on their progress. It's a highly recommended course, to go along with the great competition.
