Event Description

Celebrate design! Join us on September 12-13, 2014 at Gund Hall in Cambridge as we launch our Campaign for the Harvard University Graduate School of Design.

Don't miss out on what promises to be an inspiring series of conversations and events around design and the GSD's impact in the world. Whether you're a graduate or a friend of the School, we hope to see you on campus this fall for a look at the GSD today and tomorrow.

Friday 9.12.14

Registration Opens / Grounded Visionaries Exhibition

Opening Design Discourse
5:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m.
Sanders Theatre
Dean Mohsen Mostafavi kicks off the exciting series of conversations and events to come in the next 28 hours. Rem Koolhaas, Professor of Practice in Architecture and Urban Design, reflects on the “Elements of Architecture” in an inspired opening presentation.

Kick-Off Cocktail Reception

Engage with current students during their beloved Friday night tradition Beer + Dogs (but with a twist!)

Session I: Provocative discussions about Urbanization and what’s next for cities? Featuring Charles Waldheim, Neil Brenner, Lars Lerup, Martha Welborne, Rahul Mehrotra, Alex Krieger, Moshe Safdie, and others.

Session II: An enlightened exchange on how design will adapt to new challenges, and what its responsibility is to global society. Featuring Toshiko Mori, Jeanne Gang, Michael Murphy, Eric Howeler, and others.

Food Truck Collation
12:30 p.m. – 1:30 p.m.
Gund Hall patio
Local Cambridge/Boston food trucks Bon Me and Clover serve up crowd favorites.

Afternoon Sessions
1:30 p.m. – 4:30 p.m.
Piper Auditorium
Session I: Insightful conversations on design and the built environment. Featuring Preston Scott Cohen, Mack Scogin, Michael Van Valkenburgh, and Peter Walker.

Session II: Energetic presentations on new models of design research at the GSD and their role in advancing our knowledge and understanding of the built environment. Featuring Antoine Picon, Farshid Moussavi, Ann Forsyth, Michael Hooper, Jane Hutton, Ali Malkawi, Andrew Witt, and others.

Break 4:30 p.m. – 6:30 p.m.

Grounded Visionaries The Harvard Campaign for the GSD 6:30 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.
Piper Auditorium; Design Forward/Semiformal attire
A tribute to the School’s past and defining the aspirations for its future, including how the campaign will affect change within the GSD and on a global scale. Featuring keynotes by Fumihiko Maki and a surprise speaker to be revealed at the event.

Closing Celebration 8:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m.
Gund Hall patio tent
A design-forward party that showcases the GSD and allows you to reconnect with friends, both old and new. A generous spread of food and libations, with music, will be offered.
