Auto e Motive: JMays   1 2 3 4

Januray 28 - April 7, 2002

J Mays, the recipient of the 2002 Harvard Excellence in Design Award, is arguably the leading automotive designer in America. The most celebrated fact of his work is his ability to overlay emotional content upon a form vocabulary. This form vocabulary arises from a carefully scripted lexicon as well as from cultural cues derived from brand heritage and contemporary pop culture. The primary design methodology employed by Mays is language: he devises a visceral keyword vocabulary comprised of a period sampling of text, images, film, music, and collective memories of an era. In this installation, we have chosen to display six “concept” cars, including the GT40, because they are “dream cars”, motivated more by desire than pragmatic consumer realities.

This exhibition was co-curated by Kim Shkapich and Joe MacDonald, Assistant Professor of Architecture
