Erratics: Perception, Observation, and Practice

March 22, 2010–May 22, 2010

In conjuction with Erratics, the Special Collections Department of the Frances Loeb Library has mounted a selection of materials from the Rare Book Room and the Special Collections that will offer, in terms of both landscape and architecture, nineteenth- and twentieth-century responses to the "rock" as a natural phenomenon, as a material for functional purpose, as a design element, and as a source for poetic and practical mimicry. Among the items displayed are photographs by Roger Fenton of Wales collected by H.H. Richardson (as well as images commissioned by Richardson to document his own architectural designs), engravings from Alphand's Promenades de Paris, and Bruno Taut's visionary Alpine Architektur. The exhibition was organized by Special Collections Librarian Mary Daniels.
