Harvard University offers a wide range of funding opportunities for students. Some fellowships offer a full time work experience; grants and fellowships may also offer funding to help Harvard students to travel and conduct research overseas. The goal of these funding sources is to extend the academic experience beyond the classroom setting.

Edward M. Gramlich Fellowship in Community and Economic Development
The Edward M. Gramlich Fellowship in Community and Economic Development is co-sponsored by NeighborWorks America and the Joint Center for Housing Studies (JCHS). The program provides graduate level Harvard University students the opportunity to spend a summer on an analytical project suitable for publication as a working paper, while working directly with Joint Center faculty and NeighborWorks staff. Students will have the opportunity to present their research in Washington, D.C. at a policy briefing arranged by the Joint Center.

Rappaport Institute Public Policy Summer Fellowship
The Rappaport Institute for Greater Boston encourages graduate students to spend part of their careers in public service through a paid, 10-week summer internship in key state and local agencies in the Greater Boston area. Fellows, who represent all graduate schools in Greater Boston, participate in a weekly seminar series with leading practitioners and scholars.

Presidential Public Service Fellowships
Harvard President Drew Faust, with the generous support of an anonymous donor, has established the Presidential Public Service Fellowship Program to provide funding to students interested in pursuing public service work during the summer. Ten fellowships are awarded on a competitive basis each year to a cohort of undergraduate and graduate students participating in a broad range of activities, including government and community service, non-governmental organization and non-profit work, and innovative projects that serve the common good.

Harvard Kennedy School Indonesia Program
Harvard Kennedy School Indonesia Program encourages and assists students with an interest in Indonesia from HKS and from across Harvard University by supporting their winter and summer internships, independent research, and other forms of study conducted in Indonesia. A GSD MUP stuent received a grant in 2012.

Cogan Family Fund for Humanitarian Studies
The Cogan Family Fund for Humanitarian Studies provides funds for undergraduate and graduate students at Harvard University who are conducting field research related to crisis‐affected settings. The fund enables students to obtain international experience and an understanding of the cross‐disciplinary nature of humanitarian work. Students interested in advancing research, practice, and policy in the field of humanitarian assistance to populations affected by war, disaster, and other crises are encouraged to apply. Climate Interns Program
Spend a summer working with the Red Cross Climate Centre in one of their projects around the globe. The Climate Centre supports the humanitarian sector in understanding and addressing the humanitarian impacts of climate change and extreme events, and is seeking research support in the following countries: Botswana, Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, Mali, Mozambique, Namibia, Uganda, Zimbabwe, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Indonesia, The Philippines, and/or India. Climate Interns will contribute to the research needs of the Climate Centre, and gain field experience with a respected international humanitarian organization. They will be asked to serve in the field for a period of three months, and to provide a report of their findings to HHI and the Climate Centre.

Human Security Interns Program
A summer opportunity working with academic partners in Bangladesh on a study related to social vulnerability and human security in the face of climate change. Human Security Interns will be hosted by the Centre for Sustainable Development (CSD) at the University of Liberal Arts, Bangladesh (ULAB), and be paired with a bilingual ULAB student or researcher. Interns will consult with program coordinators from both HHI and CSD in developing their research projects.

David Rockefeller Center for Latin American Studies Travel Grants
The DRCLAS Summer Independent Internship Grants support students who will be participating in an unpaid summer internship experience in Latin America, or in the United States on a project related to Latin America. Minimum travel time is five weeks. DRCLAS also offers Summer Research Travel Grants, Conference Travel Grants, and Term-Time Travel Grants.

Center for Middle Eastern Studies Funding
Moroccan Studies Summer Awards offers two scholarships to support advanced students with research and scholarly projects. Students are required to submit a two- to three-page proposal, outlining the research question, research sites, and the resources to be used, as well as the relevant training of the applicant, including language skills, etc. Upon the completion of the study sponsored by this grant, students are required to present a two- to five-page report on their study/research, to Dr. Granara at the Center for Middle Eastern Studies, including an accounting of how the funds were spent.

Summer Research and Study Fellowships in Jewish Studies
Supports work done in the field of Jewish studies. Eligible expenses include travel, housing, tuition, and meals. Domestic and international students are welcomed to apply.

The South Asia Initiative Graduate & Internship Funding
The South Asia Initiative offers graduate research grants and internship funding for Harvard University graduate students. This funding is appropriate for short-term projects, primarily to be used during the summer or short-term travel during the academic year. SAI grants must be used within the next academic year. Graduate students from across the university are welcome to apply, but must be continuing at Harvard the following academic year.

Committee on African Studies Graduate Student Grants
The Committee on African Studies offers funding to Harvard graduate students traveling to Africa for research, internships or study abroad. Grants require a minimum stay of six weeks in Africa.

Chicago Mayor’s Fellowship
Fellows participate in budgetary, legislative, and programmatic areas of city government and work directly with Mayor’s Office senior staff. Mayoral Fellows are afforded an unparalleled opportunity to learn about public service and policy-making by directly contributing to the executive office of the City of Chicago.

Baltimore Mayoral Fellowship
The Baltimore City Mayoral Fellowship is a ten week full-time placement in a Mayoral office or agency. Fellows will be assigned to projects that focus on a myriad of public policy issues and challenges. Mayoral Fellows will complete their projects under the direction of senior level government officials and will be provided with immediate and direct feedback. Mayoral Fellows receive stipends and are placed in agencies based on their background, interests and the needs of the agencies and departments.

New York City Department of City Planning Summer Internship Program
The NYC Department of City Planning (DCP) is responsible for New York City's physical and socioeconomic planning, including land use and environmental review; preparation of plans and policies; and provision of technical assistance and planning information to government agencies, public officials, and community boards. The Department seeks talented undergraduate and graduate students with a focus on planning, urban design, technology or related fields for summer internships. Interns may work in the borough planning offices as well as in functional planning departments including Transportation, GIS/Internet Technology, Strategic Planning, Planning Coordination, Zoning and Urban Design, Land Use Review and Technical Review.

Phillip D. Peters Regional Planning Fellowship Program
In conjunction with the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning (CMAP), this Chicago, IL Fellowship is awarded annually each spring to a qualified graduate student in a field related to regional planning. The objective is to open the Fellowship to a broad range of applicants representative of the full scope of regional planning. A three-month/400-hour work experience at CMAP is provided under the guidance and mentoring of a senior staff member.

The 2012 Summer Transportation Internship Program for Diverse Groups (STIPDG)
STIPDG provides a unique opportunity to gain valuable professional experience and skills that will compliment your academic pursuits. This hands-on program is designed to mentor and cultivate tomorrow's leaders, strengthen their understanding of the transportation industry and prepare them for future public service opportunities. Greenlining Summer Associates Program
The Academy Summer Associate Program is an intensive 10-week training program for young leaders. Associates learn about issues impacting California and the nation and manage research and advocacy projects under the direction of a Greenlining staff member. Associates are exposed to community leaders, new issues, and new methods of advocacy. Associates receive regular mentorship, professional and personal skill development and are given opportunities to interact with the media, write reports/press releases, testify at key policy hearings, and participate in key meetings with top government officials, corporate CEOs, and political leaders.

Hart Howerton Fellowship (Urban Planning, Landscape Architecure & Architecture)
Each summer, Fellowships allow the firm to employ several students in planning, architecture and/or landscape architecture under a single program, mirroring our firm’s dedication to the working integration of those disciplines in how and what we design. The Fellowship also provides a component of funded travel for research on a topic that each Fellow selects. As a result of the Fellowships, schools have had the ability to graduate students with the added advantages of professional office experience, collaborative, interdisciplinary design, and worldwide travel and research.
