Advice from employers on Career Fairs and job interviews:
- Try to talk to each firm, even if only for 5 minutes. You might be missing opportunities with some really good firms, even if you've never heard of that firm before.
- Research firms prior to the Career Fair.
- Prepare a synoptic portfolio—2–3 sheets that characterize your work. This makes better use of short interview times.
- Be professional during the interview. Demonstrate how your background/experience/knowledge can add value to the organization you're applying to.
- Be respectful of time limits. Career Fair interviews are typically 15-20 minutes in length.
- It's important to bring quality portfolio prints. Even if you have great digital access via weblink, the print quality is still important in an interview.
- Be prepared to talk about your project and make sure you have done research about the firm in advance.
- Be selective in the work chosen to present, especially in a short interview
- Try to present your academic work in a way that helps employers understand how you might apply those skills in a professional design environment.
