Buying Your Computer at Harvard

University Information Systems and Technology Services

Although the GSD does not exclusively endorse UIS, and you may purchase your computer anywhere, the convenience of a local provider is considerable in the event of any needed repairs, and the service provided by UIS to the GSD students is monitored, and somewhat subsidized, by Computer Resources.

Benefits of using UIS/TPC

Buying your computer

Harvard Technology Services helps staff, students, faculty and departments purchase computers, software, and service contracts at reasonably competitive prices. Their prices reflect a substantial discount for Harvard community members on computers, peripherals, software and supplies. They facilitate discount pricing for IBM, Apple, and GovConnection. For more information, call: 617-495-5450 or see http://www.computers.harvard.edu.

Service for your computer

Computer Resources' Helpdesk will do a first level triage on student-owned computers. We can assist with most software, printing, and network problems. However, we cannot do hardware repairs or re-install operating systems for students.

The University Information Systems, (UIS), has a Product and Repair Center which handles repairs of computers and peripherals. More information about this service is provided at http://www.uis.harvard.edu/technology_services/hardware_repairs/

Repairs and replacements over your entire stay at the GSD are particularly easy for computers purchased through Technology Services.

They also offer carry-in repair services at the Science Center. Rates are shown at http://www.uis.harvard.edu/technology_services/hardware_repairs/repair_services_rates_and_policies.php

The Computer Resources Group has an arrangement for a technician from Harvard's University Information Systems Repair Operations to visit the Design School at least once a week (currently Fridays from 10am-12pm) to perform basic hardware repairs, diagnostics, memory upgrades, etc. These services include negotiating with manufacturers and obtaining spare parts. (Proof of purchase of covered equipment is generally required.)

Financial Aid for Purchasing Computers

For Design School students who are eligible for financial assistance, a maximum of $2,500 may be available through federal or private loan programs, specifically for the purchase of computer equipment. If you have financial aid questions, you may call the Office of Financial Assistance at 617-495-5455. (Please note that the Computer Resources Group is not directly involved with loans or financial aid.)
