What should I do to maintain my Windows machine?

I've received a Mac BinHex file. How do I read it?
A Mac BinHex file is just a compressed Mac file. Try using WinZip to unzip it, open the application you want to view the file in, and then open the file from within the application. If that doesnt work, youll probably just need to go to a Mac to look at it.
How do I clean up my computer to create more room on it?
See Maintenance.
My system locks-up at the Shut Down screen that states, Please wait while your computer shuts-down. I have Norton Anti-Virus, and Auto-Protect is enabled.
- Norton AntiVirus will scan any floppy disk that
you leave in the \ drive during shut down to help prevent the computer
from being infected by a boot sector virus. Since the video card is
switching from a graphics mode screen to text mode (while Norton AntiVirus
is scanning the \ drive), and then back to a graphics mode, this
can cause some video drivers to fail when refreshing the screen. The
video card will then show the Shut Down screen even though the computer
has actually shut down completely.
To turn off the text mode screen displayed by Norton AntiVirus, try the following steps:
- In Windows Explorer, navigate to the \Programs Files\Norton AntiVirus folder.
- Double-click the Apmsgoff.reg file.
- If this does not resolve the issue, add the following line in the Config.sys for file handles: FILES=80
- (from Symantec) This problem has more than one possible solution, and can be affected by factors such as which operating system you are using. There is no single solution that will work in all situations. Please read through the following document at the Symantec site, then follow the instructions in each section, testing after each one, until the problem is resolved.
