Recommended Hardware for GSD Students
For Fall 2009
We are often asked: "Should I buy a PC or a Mac?" In making your choice you should consider your own computing needs at the GSD, as well as your own experience, preferences, budget and comfort level. Apple computers have become popular in recent years but they can be limiting because much of the design software is written for Windows only.
Choosing a computer
Windows PC
A desktop or laptop system with a dual processor or a single processor with 2 Ghz or faster clock speed, 1GB of RAM and at least 50 GB of hard disk space is a basic minimum requirement. (2GB or more of RAM is recommended)
Note: We recommend Windows XP Pro for full compatibility with GSD software and systems but Vista is also an acceptable platform. Support for Windows 7 is limited because we cannot guarantee compatibility with all GSD software and systems. If you encounter problems with Windows 7 that helpdesk cannot overcome, we will suggest you revert to a previous OS, until further notice. No other Windows variant is supported at the GSD
Macintosh
A desktop system with a Power Macintosh (G5 or Intel dual-core processor) at least 2GB of RAM and at least 100 GB of hard disk space is recommended. At least Mac OSX 10.4 (Tiger) must be installed on your Macintosh; 10.5 "Leopard" is preferred .
Note: AutoCAD, 3DStudio Max, ArcInfo GIS, Rhino, and other software, are not compatible with Macintosh Operating Systems. The new Intel-based Macs are able to run Windows XP or Vista using BootCamp, Parallels or VM Fusion and so can run all Windows based software. This solution is attractive and workable but often leads to many technical challenges and OS reinstallations. Dual boot operating environments also require you to own and manage two operating systems, and the complexity may cause extra work and un-wanted interactions...
For all Systems
- Although wireless networking is available in most areas of Gund Hall and the Harvard campus, we strongly recommend using the wired, local area network with a standard network cable and your computers built-in network interface card, for fast and reliable performance.
- 2GB or more of RAM is recommended for most design computing.
- A 17"-19" monitor capable of XGA (1024x768) is a minimum requirement; higher resolution for graphics work is nice.
- A second monitor for laptop users can be convenient, providing more/larger viewing area.
- Your own printer may be helpful if you have specific printing requirements.
- For external data storage we recommend a USB flash drive for its convenience and portability. CD/DVD writers are also useful for managing large files and making back-ups. Also consider using an external ard drive for extra storage and backing up
- Sound card and speakers are useful for multi-media, but not required (use with headphones, please)
- An extended manufacturer's warranty or other service arrangement is highly recommended. You are responsible for maintaining your own computer.
- Most student desks are wired for 100Mbs network connection.
- A basic security cable to lock equipment down is generally adequate
- The strength of your wireless networking signal will vary depending on your location within Gund Hall and your proximity to a wireless access point.
Basic Software
You are responsible for your own operating system disks and original
manuals, and any special drivers, etc., as well as basic word processing
software, internet and email software (Firefox or Internet Explorer,
e.g.) and utilities such as anti-virus protection which is highly recommended and several free options are available (i.e. avg). A large library of
design-related software is available to you while at the school (the software is
"locked" so it cannot be accessed outside of Gund Hall.)
