2D Presentation Formats

2D Linear: 'Powerpoint'

The ID supports 'slide' or 'Powerpoint' type presentations. In this format, images or files are scrolled through in a linear sequence similar to those in projected environments. Linear presentations can be set up using either Portfolio Wall 1.5, Microsoft Powerpoint, or Flash.

advantages

  • finger gestures replace awkward keyboard or mouse input
  • SMART tools permit drawn or text based annotations to be made on the images or slides

disadvantages

  • limited to smaller group presentations due to the screen's maximum permissible slide size of approx. 24"x34"

Portfolio|Wall 1.5

Setting up this method is described in detail in the basic navigation and project setup sections of this help documentation. In short, files are placed in folders [personal project accounts] on the server repository. These folders are represented in Portfolio Wall as project tabs, with the files or image assets appearing as thumbnails in the Asset Display Area. Clicking on a thumbnail starts the presentation. Scrolling is controlled by finger gestures.

trouble shooting:

There is a slight time lag as images load full screen for the first time. This can be remedied by running through the presentation at full screen size prior to presenting in order to allow the images to cache [in other words by opening the images, the computer is able to store them in a temporary, frequently accessed area; when they are to be loaded again, it takes less time because the computer does not have to go back into its main storage drive]. Unfortunately, this is not a complete fix; caching will not reduce time lag in all images when a presentation is larger than 64mb.

running 3rd party application in Portfolio|Wall 1.5

Microsoft Powerpoint and Flash are supported by Portfolio|Wall; presentations are prepared with these programs on the user's personal workstation, uploaded to the server repository, and then launched from project tabs. Once launched, the applications and their functions are operated as they would be normally.

advantages

  • images and/or files uploaded with these programs do not suffer from any time lag.

disadvantages

  • the presentation does not allow image to image comparison unless it is contained in the slide itself.

2D Nonlinear: Portfolio|Wall or 3rd Party Software Applications

The Interactive Displays are ideally suited for nonlinear presentations. It is easy to navigate between different media types [such as images and movies] during the same presentation. The material can also be annotated with either text or drawings; unlike Powerpoint, saving this annotation is automatic, and can be readily turned on or off. Comparison of the image assets can also be spontaneous, as opposed to Powerpoint or Flash, in which the images have to be placed side by side during the production of the presentation.

Setting up a nonlinear presentation is similar to setting up a linear format. Image assets are prepared on the user's workstation, uploaded to the server repository, and then accessed using Portfolio|Wall 1.5.
