Project Setup and Portfolio|Wall Software

Portfolio|Wall Software runs only on the Interactive Displays. It extends the metaphor of a digital corkboard to allow teams to view, share, annotate, and manage visual digital assets such as images, movies, animations, 3D models, and most other digital files important to modern digital design and production. It supports non-linear review/presentation and discussion of design content with an additional interface for side by side comparisons, and annotation.

Because Portfolio|Wall 1.5, the image asset management software, is installed only on the Interactive Display stations; to use the software, and create a project, you must be able to access your 'nettemp' data storage folder through your terra account.

The Portfolio|Wall software is founded on the notion that all digital assts are to be shared among groups. Therefore, whether you organize your work on the ID’s local computer or in a 'nettemp' folder, the folder must be shared or readable by the World, like the contents of your public_html folder in your terra account. If you plan on using 'nettemp', please note that the folder is already “shared” or “readable by the world”. If you choose to store your project locally you must create a shared folder in the student work directory. It is preferred that you work over the network. To learn more about this consult Porfolio|Wall’s documentation or review the file permission documents in the Windows Operating System Help Documentation. Portfolio|Wall also assumes a strict file organization policy.

Supported File Types in Portfolio|Wall 1.5

Portfolio|Wall 1.5 supports a variety of common graphic oriented file types: images, movies, or 3D models. For movie and image files, it should be noted that the plasma screen resolution is 1280x768. The program's default preference will size the files to fit the screen, which means that smaller images will become blurry when they are enlarged. For best results, keep images and movies at or near 1280x768 and 72dpi or similar proportions. Presentation quality and performance are not improved with image resolution set greater than 150dpi.

Images:

  • RGB, PCT, PNG, BMP, PIC, TGA
  • GIF [except animated GIF's; GIF89a without animation is supported]

Image assest management

It is essentially composed of the following:

Project Data Folder . This is a storage folder located on either nettemp or a C.D. that contains all the prepared data for your project. It is possible to store more than one project in this folder but they must be organized in subfolders.

Alias Wavefront's Portfolio|Wall 1.5. This software is the medium by which the user presents prepared material. The software is a direct mirror of the storage folder's content, viewed as a project tab (or tabs if more than one project is present) in the software interface. The project tabs contain whatever image assets are uploaded to the project storage folder. It is important to remember that the relationship is two-way: actions performed on image assets while in Portfolio Wall, such as moving files between project tabs or deleting files, are also performed on the server [and vice versa].

It should be noted that Portfolio|Wall 1.5 is able to view only one level of folders. Subfolders and their image assets can not be seen in the software's project tab interface. This allows a means of organizing what image assets are to be viewed in the presentation.

Uploading Image Assets

  1. Map network connection to 'nettemp' data storage folder through your terra account. See mapping your network Drive.
  2. Prepare image assets/digital content [images, movies, documents, models], and organize in a uniquely named folder or directory.
  3. Drag and drop the folder of image assets from the local CPU to your personal data storage folder on 'nettemp'.

Getting Started with Portfolio|Wall

When Portfolio|Wall [PW] creates a new project, it must be created in the root folder(data storage folder) on 'nettemp'. You have complete freedom in the number of subfolders(project folders) in your folder and your naming conventions, but PW must create its project file in the root folder containing all projects.

Launching Portfolio|Wall Software & Creating a Project

  1. Find the icon on the desktop or locate the software through the start menu.
  2. The first time you launch the software, the interface will ask you to “Open” or create a “New” project.
  3. Select “New” and point the software toward your 'nettemp' folder or the local shared folder.
  4. When the project window opens, save the project. Accept the default name or specify your own file name.

Locating your Digital Assets

Under the Pull Down Menu’s and Tool Bar, you will see a series of tabbed folders. The names of the folder will reflect the names of the folders that you copied to your 'nettemp' folder. Open each of the tabbed folders and confirm that your assts are legible and available for viewing. Note: If you delete a tab or a digital asset – it is forever deleted from your account.

Navigating the Portfolio|Wall Interface

The Portfolio|Wall 1.5 interface is simple and intuitive. It can be broken down into four areas:

Menus. These perform the various actions; they are described in detail in the software's available help documentation.

Project Tabs. As previously discussed, these are nothing more than the project folders located in your 'nettempt' storage folder.

Asset Display Area. Located to the left side, just below the project tabs, the asset display area contains the project account's contents. Displayed here as variable sized thumbnails, the image assets [images, movies, or documents] can be manipulated in terms of their presentation sequence, viewed full screen, compared, annotated, or launched via third party application.

Work Area. Located on the right hand side of a project tab, the work area provides another means of comparing two or more thumbnails in order to facilitate peer and/or faculty discussion.

The Interactive Display System facilitates the presentation of 2, 3, and 4 dimensional media [known as image assets] by combining touch screen technology with image asset management software. By simply gesturing with one's finger, one can navigate more easily and more intuitively through prepared images than projected environments currently permit. This enables the individual presenting to serve as the interface between the work and the audience.
