Map a Network Drive: Windows
This page describes how to map a drive on a Windows computer; such as to connect to 'DesignApps' for software, or to 'terra' for your home directory and other resources. DesignApps is where you'll find all software installers, including KeyServer, and others, for both Windows and Macs. Terra has your 'home directory', and private file storage space, and public storage space, including Nettmp
(N.B. Note the difference in location: terra.gsd.harvard.edu vs designapps.design.harvard.edu)
- My Computer, Tools, Map Network Drive.
- Enter the drive and folder path into the Map Network Drive window.
- Enter your username and password.
- Check to see that your network drive has been successfully mapped.
- Remember to disconnect your network drive, and log out when working on a public computer!
-
Open My Computer. Go to the Tools menu and select Map Network Drive.
-
For Drive, choose a letter from the pull-down menu (any letter will do). For Folder, type \\designapps\apps (for software )
or \\terra\username (for Terra) where username is your GSD account username(the username in the example is "jsmith".)
If you are connecting from outside the GSD you will need to use a fully qualified name for the server, like this:
\\terra.gsd.harvard.edu\username
or
\\designapps.design.harvard.edu\apps.
Do not select 'Reconnect at logon' if working on a public or non-personal computer. Click Finish.
-
You may be prompted for your username and password, remember to precede your username with "design\", as shown below.
-
You should see an icon with your username on 'terra' or 'designapps', together with the drive letter ('L:', e.g.) appearing in your My Computer window. If you don't, go up to the View menu and choose Refresh. Congratulations - you have successfully mapped your network drive.
-
Remember to disconnect your network drive and log out when working on a public computer! To disconnect your network drive, right click it and choose Disconnect.
