Remote Access Policies for Modem Users
Local Dial-up Access:
Local (617 area code) dial-up access is now free to all GSD staff and faculty. By dialing the Harvard FAS modem pool at 617-949-0000, and using your HUID as a user-name and your PIN number as a password, you may obtain a connection to the internet, and thereby check your e-mail (preferably using the web mail client), surf the web, etc.
All the charges for these accounts are currently absorbed by Computer Resources. (You may also call this number long-distance from anywhere; the long distance phone charges incurred will be your personal responsibility.)
Individual Staff and Faculty may at any time acquire their own Internet Service Provider (ISP) account from AT&T Global or other provider* using their own or departmental funds (in the latter case with approval from the department, of course)
*CRG supports and will configure AT&T Global Accounts only, and only on GSD-owned computers- not personal or home computers.
Long Distance (incl. International) Dial-up Access:
If you are traveling on school business and need to have remote access to the Internet, you should check in with Helpdesk in advance of your trip to get the necessary software and reserve a traveling dial-up account.
Long-distance (especially international) travelers on GSD business may request an AT&T Global account for short-term loan- typically up to two weeks. (We have only ten accounts.) You will need to contact Helpdesk at least 48 hours in advance to reserve an account and get the necessary software and current password to use during the period of your travel. After the loan period the password will be changed so that the account can be used by others.
Normal usage of these accounts (e.g. using the provided local access phone number in foreign countries) is paid for by Computer Resources. Costs incurred from using 1-800 numbers, which are substantially more expensive, will need to be reimbursed by the traveler or their department or grant, etc.
