Plotting with ArcPress

Using the ArcPress Extension for Making Plot Files from ArcView

When trying to make large format plots from arcview, it is best to use ESRI's own printing extension -- ArcPress. Here's how:

  1. Load the ArcPress Extension: Within ArcView, go to the File menu, then click ArcPress. When you have a View or Layout window active, you will have an ArcPress icon at the right hand side of the tool bar that looks like a printer. If you hold your pointer over it, you will see a little tag that says ArcPress.
  2. Make your theme or layout the Active Window, and click the ArcPress button.
  3. Ignore the highlighted text in the first ArcPress window. Click "Print"
  4. In the "Device" pull-down list, choose "HP RTL". Then click the check-box next to "Print to File." If you are interested in adjusting the size or DPI of the print at this time, click "Options". If not, click OK.
  5. Enter a name for your RTL file. It is best to save the file in the c:\Windows\Temp, or c:\Temp; but in any case, just remember what you named the file, and where you saved it.
  6. Now drag the file to plottmp, and go plot it.
