GSD Software
The GSD Computer Resources Group has servers that house applications which may be downloaded and run on computers on the GSD Local Area Network (LAN.) Most of the applications are commercial, copyrighted programs for which the GSD has a limited number of licenses. Almost all of these programs have been altered with "Keyserver" - a program that requires the running workstation to check out a license over the LAN before the application will start, and keep in contact with the KeyServer while the application is running.
Word Processing
All GSD public computers have word processing programs installed, however, they are not free nor key served for student computers. Students are strongly encouraged to purchase their own word processing software.
Accessing Software
Connecting to the application servers
Many applications are available for download from the Windows server 'DesignApps' (for mac software, too).
Map a Network Drive to smb:\\designapps.design.harvard.edu\apps' and help yourself!
For instructions on how to Map a Network Drive, see the following
online manual pages: for windows Mapping
a Network Drive (PC), or for Mac Mapping a Network Drive (MAC).
Downloading Applications
Once you have mounted your home directory, and opened the "public/software" folder, you will see various directories: 'macapps' folder is where applications for Macintosh are kept and the 'winapps' folder is where we keep applications for Windows computers.
Each application on the server is in a directory. Where special instructions are required for installation you will find them in a text file called GSDREADME or !!!GSDREADME. Read these files wherever you find them, they contain license information and a ste-by-step installation process.
Running Keyserved Applications
Many of the applications in "software" require that the computer attempting to run them be connected to a special KeyServer computer over the GSD Local Area Network. You must install the Key Access Client in order for these applications to run. Programs that are key-served check out a license from a pool of licenses each time you launch the program. Therefore if you are outside the network and you no longer have access to the license pool, you will not be able to use the software.
Installing KeyAccess on a PC
The installation program for Key Access is located at winapps. For Windows machines it is located in a folder named "Keys". Copy the KSClient.msi file to your local machine then double-click to begin the installation, accepting the default configurations. All Windows machines connect to the KeyServer automatically when a KeyServed application is started.
Installing Key Access on an Mac OS X
Copy the file KSClient.sea from the folder macapps/KeyAccess/KeyAccess for OS X. Double-click to install KeyAccess. When prompted enter the IP address listed in the GSD_READ_ME text file .
If you use Mac OS X Tiger use K2Client603.sea install file not the .dmg file.
