• About VISTA & Windows7 : Although our preferred and recommended Operating System for all GSD Windows computers is 'Windows XP SP3', we expect some students, especially those who purchase new computers, will bring other Microsoft Operating Systems, such as 'VISTA', 'XPHome', or 'Windows7' to the GSD. Each of these has its defects. As of Fall 2009 the Computer Resources Group's policy is that if you encounter problems with these other operating systems that helpdesk cannot overcome, we will suggest you revert to Windows XP, until further notice.

Network Security Announcement

• All computers connected to the GSD network must be personally identified, virus-free, and protected from common infections and exploits. This means that:

• You must REGISTER your computer ONLINE once it is physically connected to the GSD network.

  1. Once your computer is plugged in via an ethernet cable at the GSD (not remotely, and not wirelessly), Visit https://netregister.gsd.harvard.edu. On your unregistered computer, open any browser, which will redirect you to a Registration Page.
  2. Accept the 'Acceptable Use Policy' by entering your HUID and PIN. (PIN Management Utilities at www.pin.harvard.edu).
  3. Choose Register. You may choose to 'SKIP' registration for 24 hours up to three times. After that time unregistered computers will not be able to connect to the network.

• You must install and maintain anti-virus software, and perform regular (at least weekly; daily is best!) updates of virus definitions. Read more on the CRG Virus Info page.

  You can sign up with CRG for automatic regular anti-virus updates, for a small fee. Fee Services (PDF).

• You must install regular Operating System patches and security updates from your OS manufacturer (probably either Microsoft or Apple).

• If we detect that your computer is infected by any known malware, the network connection will be temporarily suspended, and the computer 'quarantined' until you have removed the infection and taken steps to prevent a recurrence.

• Inform yourself about basic network safety, especially:

  • never open email attachments or web-downloads that you are unsure of
  • keep anti-virus measures installed and up-to-date
  • never install 'bootleg' software
  • always keep backups of important work
