Emanuel Kelly Elevated to College of Fellows
Philadelphia PA, March 16, 2004—The American Institute of Architects (AIA) has elevated Emanuel Kelly (MCPUD, GSD, ’74) to its prestigious College of Fellows, an honor awarded to members who have made contributions of national significance to the profession. Mr. Kelly is one of 81 architects nationwide, and the sole Philadelphia architect, to receive the honor this year. Mr. Kelly, a principal of Kelly/Maiello Architects & Planners, was elected to receive this honor because of his contributions to society that include service to the community and the profession, and for balancing teaching with practice and mentoring young professionals. He is a member of the Bureau of Historic Preservation (BHP) of the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission that evaluates and recommends Pennsylvania historic properties and districts for placement on the National Register of Historic Places. He also serves on the Philadelphia Art Commission and the Fairmount Park Art Association. In May 2002, Mr. Kelly received the Julian Francis Abele Award for Lifetime Achievement from the Philadelphia Chapter of the National Organization of Minority Architects. In 1992 he became the first African American to serve as president of AIA Philadelphia. The Kelly/Maiello firm is a minority owned business that has been providing architectural and planning services in Philadelphia and the region for 28 years. Emanuel Kelly FAIA and Vincent Maiello AIA are the principals and co-founders. From its inception the firm has been committed to community revitalization, in Center City and in Philadelphia’s neighborhoods. Among the firm’s projects are the Exterior Rehabilitation of Philadelphia City Hall; the Pennsylvania Convention Center with Thompson, Ventulett, Stainback and Associates and Vitetta; the soon-to-be completed Paul and Christine Washington Family and Community Center at the Church of the Advocate in North Philadelphia and the award-winning Regent Terrace project, the restoration of an entire block of Italianate apartment buildings for affordable housing in Philadelphia. In becoming a Fellow, Mr. Kelly is one of approximately 2,500 AIA members, out of a total membership of 70,000, to be so honored. Fellowship is conferred on architects with at least 10 years of membership in the AIA who have made significant contributions in the following areas: the aesthetic, scientific, and practical efficiency of the profession; the standards of architectural education, training, and practice; the building industry through leadership in the AIA and other related professional organizations; advancement of living standards of people through an improved environment, and to society through significant public service. The new Fellows, who are entitled to use the designation “FAIA” following their names, will be invested in the College of Fellows at the 2004 AIA National Convention and Expo in Chicago on June 11. |
