On Thursday, May 10, 2007, Avi Lothan, FAIA (MArch '82), Principal at Chicago-based DeStefano + Partners,
served on the jury for the Schiff Foundation Fellowship which is administered by the Art Institute of Chicago's
Department of Architecture.
The Schiff Fellowship was founded in 1988 with a generous endowment from Harold Schiff for the purpose of supporting young
architects. The jury selected one winner from student submissions, with the winner receiving an award of approximately
$25,000 for an architectural project. The jury also reviewed short essays submitted by graduate students from Chicago-area
universities for the critical architectural writing prize of $10,000. The focus of the essay is Chicago's built environment.
The jury also included: Sarah Herda, Director of The Graham Foundation; Ned Cramer, Editor-in-Chief, Architect magazine;
Adriam Smith, FAIA, architect, Office of Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill).
Harold Schiff is a retired partner of Schal Associates, the construction firm that built the Chicago Board of Options Exchange
and 200 South Wacker Drive. In a generous gesture to support young architects and give back to the city where he
established his successful career in construction management, Harold Schiff gave a substantial gift to the Department
of Architecture at the Art Institute to endow the Schiff Foundation Fellowship for Architecture.
