Currently Open PositionsTenured Professor/Chair Position A senior faculty position is available for a highly qualified practitioner and/or scholar to offer graduate-level instruction in urban planning or urban design and to serve, for a five year term, as Chair of the Department of Urban Planning and Design. The appointment will be made at the level of Professor and is a full-time tenured position. The teaching responsibilities will involve instruction in design studios and lecture and seminar courses in a secondary specialty. Candidates should be urban designers, urban planner, or scholars who have achieved excellence in their primary professional and/or scholarly endeavors and have been recognized by peers to be truly outstanding in their fields. These full-time voting faculty positions may be filled for a fixed initial term, normally of four years, with responsibilities for teaching, scholarship, and administration. Candidates should have some teaching experience and their creative work in design, scholarship or professional practice, or a combination thereof, should indicate strong promise of creative achievement in the field. One or more adjunct associate professor positions are available beginning in academic year 2010-2011 for persons qualified to offer graduate-level instruction in architectural design. Adjunct associate professor is normally a half-time faculty position and requires the maintenance of an active outside practice or research activities. These positions may be filled for a fixed initial term, normally of five years with the possibility of renewal for a total term of up to ten years, with responsibilities for studio teaching and administration. Candidates should have substantial teaching experience and professional accomplishments and their creative work in design, scholarship or professional practice, or a combination thereof, should indicate strong promise of creative achievement in the field. Candidates in the area of computational technology should have a background in the design professions. Areas of expertise should include, among others, geometric and parametric modeling, animations, multi-media, scripting or programming, as well as interactivity. Candidates in the area of environmental technologies should be familiar with all aspects of sustainability in design, and be able to interact with related disciplines such as ecology, engineering, public health, and public policy. Preferred candidates should have a particular strength in an area (e.g., energy, ventilation) and proficiency in advanced simulation methods. Candidates in the area of building technology should have a background in building construction or building structures, with a strong interest in material technologies. Preferred candidates should have a particular strength in areas such as advanced and generative structural design, digital fabrication technology, or smart materials and intelligent buildings. These full-time positions may be filled for a fixed initial term, normally of four years, with responsibilities for teaching, scholarship, and administration. Adjunct appointments on a part time basis will be considered in exceptional cases. Teaching responsibilities will include fundamental courses as well as advanced elective courses in the respective area. Assistant or Associate Professor The Harvard University Graduate School of Design invites applications for one or more full-time academic ladder appointments at the rank of assistant or associate professor (untenured), to begin Fall 2010. The successful candidate(s) will be expected to teach graduate-level urban planning or urban design courses and studios, and conduct research in core subjects of urban planning, urban design and the built environment broadly. We seek candidates with teaching and research interests in the area of international development, although strong candidates with research interests in other core subjects will also be considered. A Ph.D. in urban planning or equivalent doctoral degree in a related field is preferred, although a substantive professional urban planning or urban design background will also be considered. This full-time position may be filled for a fixed initial term, normally of four years, with responsibilities for teaching, research, and administration. Candidates should have demonstrated excellence in landscape architectural design as well as teaching experience in design studio, workshop, and seminar formats. Experience in digital media and contemporary practices of landscape design is also desirable. Candidates should have a master’s degree in landscape architecture or the equivalent as well as demonstrated evidence of their potential to pursue independent research in the form of peer-reviewed creative design practice, scholarship, or a combination of the two.
