Doctor of Philosophy: PhD
Co-administered by the Graduate School of Design and the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, the PhD in Architecture, Landscape Architecture and Urban Planning offers advanced study and research in the following fields: architectural theory, architectural history, and urban studies. It thus covers subjects related to the humanities-based study of architecture and the built environment. It is intended for students who want to pursue a distinguished academic career in these domains. Students accepted in the program take two years of course work before passing a general exam and defining their dissertation subject. During their first two years, students are advised by two faculty members. After their gener-als, they choose a primary advisor and a committee to assist them in their dissertation research and writing. Students are expected to complete their dissertation between 5 and 7 years after their admission. PhD graduates go on to teach in universities and colleges around the world.
