Carrels

The Loeb Library has a total of twenty-three study carrels located on the lower level against the back wall.  Each carrel seats two people, one next to the wall and one next to the aisle, for a total of 46 seats. Carrels are assigned at the beginning of each semester.

Assignment Policies

Restrictions apply to those who may submit applications for carrels. Applicants MUST be MDes students, DDes students, or thesis prep students enrolled in a GSD degree program.

To apply for a carrel, print out and fill in the carrel application form and submit it at the Circulation Desk before the deadline on the form. Questions and comments should be directed to Mendel Zou, 495-9162, mtsou@gsd.harvard.edu.

Assignment Procedures

Assignments will be made on the basis of submission date (first come, first served, assuming the requirements are met).  Students who have been assigned to a carrel will be notified by email within one week after the deadline noted on the form.

Those to whom carrels have been assigned may apply for a key to the locked, two-drawer cabinet adjacent to the carrel. Both drawers have identical keys, so security is limited. No library books may be kept in a locked cabinet, and it is not recommended that students store valuables there, such as laptops. The Loeb Library is not responsible for personal property stored in carrel cabinets.

Each cabinet key requires a $30 deposit, refundable when the key is returned. To apply for a key, contact the Circulation Supervisor on duty at the Circulation Desk.

Charging Books to a Carrel

Library books may be charged to a student’s carrel for one semester. Carrel shelf space must be shared equally between the two carrel holders.

To charge a book to a carrel, bring the book to the Circulation Desk; a yellow carrel identification slip will be issued for each book. Once a book is charged to a carrel, it must be used only in the library. If a carrel holder wishes to use a carrel book outside the library, it must be charged to the student’s ID at the Circulation Desk.

Restrictions:  Periodicals, reference books, reserve books, and books classed as Core, VF and in-library-use-only may not be charged to a carrel. Books from other libraries are left at the carrel holder’s own risk.
