VEGETATIVE CHARACTERISTICS:

Slender, green leaves can grow to 2 feet tall; smell strongly of garlic.

FLOWERS:

Flowers produced at top of stems in May or June.

FRUIT/DISPERSAL AGENTS:

Flowers followed by bulblets that take root when they touch the ground. Also reproduces from underground bulbs.

ECOLOGICAL PREFERENCE:

Prefers moist, shady habitats; minimally maintained public parks and open space; woodlands that develop on abandoned open space; freshwater wetlands, ponds and streams.

ENVIRONMENTAL FUNCTION:

Disturbance-adapted colonizer.

CULTURAL SIGNIFICANCE:

The bulbs of this plant are edible.
