Yellowish spikelets near the top of the stem.

Once established, it spreads rapidly from underground tubers to form large clumps.
ECOLOGICAL PREFERENCE:
Minimally maintained public parks and open space; abandoned grasslands (meadows); freshwater wetlands, ponds and streams.
ENVIRONMENTAL FUNCTION:
Food and/or habitat for wildlife.
CULTURAL SIGNIFICANCE:
The underground tubers of this plant are supposedly edible.
