Charles Waldheim, John E. Irving Professor of Landscape Architecture and Chair of the Department of Landscape Architecture, was recently invited to give a keynote lecture at the Chinese Society of Landscape Architecture (CHSLA) annual meeting in Nanjing, China, on “Landscape as Urbanism and Digital Media.”

The meeting took place on Saturday, October 29, and was attended by a number of professionals from the field of landscape architecture, including: QiXiang Zhang, Professor and Vice President of Beijing Forestry University; Weishan Wu, Dean of the Chinese National Academy of Sculpture; and Eckhart Lange, Professor and Dean from the College of Landscape Architecture at the University of Sheffield, England. Among the topics discussed were integration of landscape architecture across different professions, diversity and its application of the human settlement, and visual representation for communication in planning and designing.

The CHSLA was formally founded in Hangzhou in November 1948, with its secretariat residing in Beijing. Academic activity for CHSLA began in 1978, and it is also part of the Chinese Association of Science and Technology (CAST), where Professor Zhou Ganshi is the current President.

The CHSLA aims to foster a devotion towards preservation of national, natural, and historical resources as well as the construction of eco-friendly and aesthetically pleasing habitat environments. The Society is focused on developing the excellent tradition of Chinese landscape architecture, while absorbing the advanced sciences and technologies from around the world. The CHSLA works to establish and improve a scientific system of landscape architecture with Chinese characteristics as well as promoting the training of professionals and working for the needs of the people in regard to fine natural environment.
