GSD Critical Design Conference, April 2008The First International Conference on Critical Digital fosters digital media, technology dialogue

Approximately 40 scholars from around the world attended the First International Conference on Critical Digital on April 18 and 19 at the GSD.  Participants presented papers and participated in panel discussions to foster a dialogue about digital media, digital technology, and design and to challenge the basis of contemporary digital media arguments.  The theme and title of the event, “What Matter(s),” set out to identify, distinguish, and offer a critique on current trends, tendencies, movements, and practices in digital culture.  Discussion topics ranged from criticism on current digital practice to philosophical investigations on the future of digital design.

The conference opened with remarks from the Mohsen Mostafavi, Dean of the Faculty of Design at the GSD and G. Ware Travelstead Professor of Design, followed by comments from associate professor Kostas Terzidis. The conference was organized by GSD faculty members Kostas Terzidis, Ingeborg Rocker, Mariana Ibanez, and Jeannette Kuo as well as doctoral students Teri Rueb, Jan Janclaus, Taro Narahara, Dido Tsigaridi, Jock Herron, Zenovia Toloudi, and Nashid Nabian. This symposium was the first in a series of upcoming Critical Digital conferences.  More information can be found at www.gsd.harvard.edu/cdc
