GSD announces the Harvard Architectural and Urban Society_Alumni

GSD student Ivan Shumkov, MArch II ’08, and a group of Harvard Alumni have founded Harvard Architectural and Urban Society_Alumni (HAUS_A) Shared Interest Group (SIG) at Harvard Alumni Association (HAA) with the goal of making a positive change in the way people build and inhabit the world.

HAUS_A has been approved by the Executive Committee of the HAA Board of Directors as an official HAA Shared Interest Group. The organization now comprises more than 300 Harvard alumni, students, and faculty from a range of professional and academic fields. It offers an opportunity for collaboration among individuals from all Harvard schools interested in the contemporary city and urban culture.

Among the organization’s goals are to maintain, expand, and promote the network of Harvard professionals in the fields of architecture, urbanism, landscape, and development. In order to enhance the relation between the University and alumni, the group is preparing a mentorship and internship program for Harvard students. The program will encourage alumni involvement in academic affairs that affect architectural and urban issues within the Harvard community and link professional practice and academic research in the built and natural environments.

In January, the HAUS_A leaders—Ivan Shumkov; Brett Stilwell, MArch I ’02, and Hannah Peters, GSD Associate Dean for External Relations and HAUS_A member—participated in the 2008 Harvard Alumni Leadership Conference organized by the HAA where the group was officially introduced to the Harvard Alumni community. The meeting was also an opportunity for HAUS_A to participate in HAA projects with other Harvard Clubs and SIGs.

HAUS_A currently collaborates with Harvard’s Graduate School of Design in organizing conferences, seminars, workshops, exhibitions, and other programs and initiatives. It will also work closely with the University and Alumni Councils from GSD and all other Harvard schools to further enrich the Harvard community.
