Hyuntek Yoon and Soobum You (both MArch  ’12) have won the Detroit by Design 2012: Detroit Riverfront Competition with their concept for an urban fantasy land that bridges streetscape and river. The GSD grads, partners in the firm Atelier WHY, envisioned a magical forest in a disused area that was once the city’s “town square.”

The competition, sponsored by AIA Urban Priorities Committee in Detroit, encouraged creative ideas that would spark imagination and conversation about the future of Detroit and inform the city’s planning. Atelier WHY’s “Forest” achieves physical, visual, cultural and historical connection with the river through a mixture of old and new, natural and manmade, dense and open elements that invite flexible public uses.
