Re-envisioned Mumbai seafront

A team of Harvard students has won the Massachusetts Chapter of the American Planning Association 2012 Student Project Award.  James Cody Birkey (MDesS ’13) and Jaemin Ha (MAUD ’12) collaborated with Mukul Bafana (HBS) and Laura Bishop (HLS) on the Mumbai Port Redevelopment project, which shares the award with a project led by a team from the Conway School of Landscape Design.

The Mumbai project analyzed Mumbai’s decrepit and underused eastern seafront and reconceptualized it as the city’s “courtyard and community space,” with a mix of multi-income residential, commercial, recreation, transportation and civic uses. Faculty advisors included Richard Peiser (professor of real estate development), Rahul Mehrotra (chair of the Department of Urban Planning and Design and professor of urban design and planning) and Nicolas Retsinas (senior lecturer in real estate, HBS).
