Restoration of Charles River Esplanade for the Century
Feb 28, 2012
Esplanade 2020, a visionary plan published by The Esplanade Association, outlines the conservation of the Charles River Esplanade at the park’s 100th anniversary. A team of designers, landscape architects, horticulturists, traffic experts, environmentalists, and other community members included Mark Favermann (MCRP '78). The project aims to transform Boston’s waterside park into a world-leading urban public space.
An article in the Boston Globe on February 14 extends the effects of the Esplanade project to Massachusetts-wide infrastructure initiatives that will prioritize bike lanes and sidewalks. Rather than a master plan, the report on the Esplanade makes site-specific recommendations to be elaborated on to make the park relevant, engaging, and fun for its next century.

Several other GSD alums were involved in the project as well. These included Loeb Fellow architectural photographer Peter Vanderwarker who shot the aerial photograph above, John Shields (MArchUD '74) and Anthony Pangaro (MArch'69 and Loeb Fellow '75).
