Thomas Schroepfer Promoted to Associate Professor of Architecture
Thomas Schroepfer has assumed the role of Associate Professor of Architecture as of 1 July 2009. Schroepfer has been Assistant Professor of Architecture at the GSD since 2005 and teaches design studios and courses on materials and construction.
Schroepfer's doctoral dissertation at the GSD examined the impact of globalization on contemporary design and construction practices. This ongoing research has also been the topic of a number of his publications including Global Design and Building Practice 1 and 2. He is a registered architect in Germany and has been associated, in addition to his own practice, with several architectural practices in Berlin, among them Studio Daniel Libeskind, as well as with design and building firms involved with large-scale projects in Europe. Schroepfer's own projects have received awards and recognition, including from the Union Internationale des Architectes (UIA), and his work has been exhibited in the United States, Europe, and Asia. While at Harvard, he has been awarded grants from the University Asia Center and the Real Estate Academic Initiative to support his projects and research.
Schroepfer's current research, titled Material Design, explores materials and methods of construction as well as sustainability in architecture. It has led to a number of built projects, including most recently a pavilion for the 2009 Gwangju Design Biennale in Korea. His journal and book publications include "Integrating Material Culture" in the Journal of Architectural Education and Birkhäuser's Principles of Construction book series, for which he is a subject editor. A book titled Material Design is forthcoming from the same publisher in Spring 2010.
Schroepfer received concurrently a Bachelor’s of Architecture from The Cooper Union in New York and a Diplom-Ingenieur in Architecture from the University of the Arts Berlin, and subsequently a Master’s of Architecture with distinction and a Doctor of Design degree, both from the GSD.
