Recent GSD Exhibition celebrated a masterpiece of Modern Architecture by Le Corbusier

“Design Process in the Architecture of Le Corbusier and Pierre Jeanneret, Pavillon des Temps Nouveaux, 1937 International Exhibition in Paris”

February 22-March 2, 2008 in Harvard GSD Lobby

The exhibition, curated by GSD student Ivan Shumkov, MArch II ’08, traced the evolution of the Pavillon des Temps Nouveaux, a 1936 project by Le Corbusier and Pierre Jeanneret, from its design origins in the early sketches to the completion of the building. The exhibit included projects, books, and interviews with Le Corbusier, as well as videos of the 1930s in Paris, the CIAM congress, and the Charte d’Athènes. In conjunction with the exhibition, there was a screening of the three-part documentary film on Le Corbusier in Piper Auditorium. The event was organized by the Harvard European Club and Harvard Architectural and Urban Society_Alumni.

“Modern Architecture has produced a significant change in the way we design, build, and inhabit the world,” said Ivan Shumkov. “Its protagonist, Le Corbusier, is considered by many critics to be the most important architect of the 20th century. His work as an architect, city planner, writer, and painter still remains very influential today.”

Le Corbusier and his cousin, Pierre Jeanneret, designed Pavillon des Temps Nouveaux for the 1937 International Exhibition in Paris as a museum dedicated to Urbanism. Their work at the World’s Fair involved many of the architectural, artistic, and political vanguard of the era, including former Harvard GSD Dean Josep Lluis Sert. The pavilion was a mobile exhibition on urbanism, a building for the CIAM V conference Logis et Loisirs, and a proposal on solving the pressing problems of modern society. The building contained elements of Le Corbusier’s previous works and was also the inspiration for many of his later projects and theories. The project was a manifesto of the architectural and urban revolution by the Modern Movement and contains the keys for understanding modernism.

Guests of honor for the opening event were GSD Dean Mohsen Mostafavi, Josep Lluis Sert Professor in Architecture Rafael Moneo, and Mary Daniels, Director of Special Collections at the Loeb Library. The exhibition was largely attended by the GSD community and guests and was the most recent homage by the Harvard GSD to its modernist heritage.
