Florian Idenburg’s (adjunct associate professor of architecture) firm SO – IL has won the UC Davis competition for the new Jan Shrem and Maria Manetti Shrem Museum of Art. It’s been a year of accolades for SO – IL: they were lauded for the Kukje Gallery in Korea and their tent designs at the Frieze Art Fair, and they recently received the Architectural League of N.Y.'s “Emerging Voices” award.

“The design for the new museum at UC Davis turns the traditional model of museum design inside out,” said UC Davis Chancellor Linda Katehi. “From its curved glass walls to its soaring canopy, it will draw people in, surprise them, and engage them. All who enter this museum will become students again.”

The museum has been envisioned as a regional center of experimentation, participation and learning. The winning design was selected for its alignment with the essential characteristics of UC Davis, its celebration of culture and cultivation, its use of light and its potential to expand and evolve. SO - IL will work with the architectural firm Bohlin Cywinski Jackson and contractor Whiting-Turner. Learn more about the proposed museum.

Florian Idenburg discusses his vision for the museum in a video by Joe Proudman/UC Davis.
